Stainless Steel Plate Weight Calculation
Plate weight Formula: L × W × T × density.
For example, with a plate dimension of 1500 mm width x 1.5 mm height x 3000 mm length, the volume is 0.00675 m3, given a density of 7930 kg/m3, so the weight of the plate is 0.00675m3 x 7930kg/m3 = 53.5 kg.
Stainless Steel Grades for Plates and Sheets
There are varieties of stainless steel grades, these grades have excellent properties to suit applications, they are known as high strength and superior corrosion resistance material. 304 and 316L are the most used grades, common grades are listed for reference, and selecting which type of stainless steel grade depends on a specific application.
304 Stainless Steel Plate
304 Stainless Steel Plate is one of the most versatile stainless grade, 304 stainless plate offers good corrosion resistance to many chemical corrodents as well as industrial atmospheres and marine environments. 304 Stainless Steel Plate has excellent formability and can be readily welded by all common methods.
304L Stainless Steel Plate
304L Stainless Steel Sheet is an extremely versatile stainless steel material with a chemical composition that includes a minimum of 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance and formability. The material has a maximum carbon content of only 0.03 percent, which helps to reduce the tendency of intergranular corrosion during welding.
304L Stainless Steel Sheet is particularly suitable for applications where welding is required due to its good weldability and workability. It can be processed through a variety of fusion and resistance welding processes, and can still maintain excellent corrosion resistance after welding. In addition, it also has a high degree of heat resistance and can maintain stable performance in high-temperature environments.
In the field of application, 304L stainless steel plate is widely used in manufacturing food processing equipment, medical equipment, kitchen utensils, building decoration materials, and automotive and aerospace structural components. Its non-toxic, corrosion-resistant and easy-to-clean characteristics ensure its reliability and safety in these fields.
316 Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate
Like 304 SS, grade 316 stainless steel also has high nickel and chromium content, but adding molybdenum further improves the corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides or chlorinated substances. These properties make grade 316 stainless steel sheets and plates ideal for medical applications, marine environments, refining or chemical processing, and other highly corrosive environments.
316L Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate
316L is low carbon 316, carbon content does not exceed 0.03%, and the addition of Mo, 316L stainless steel plate has excellent corrosion resistance, especially pitting resistance; high-temperature strength is also very good; excellent work hardening (weakly magnetic after processing); solid solution state non-magnetic. 316L stainless steel plate is after 304 stainless steel plate, the second widely used steel, has a stronger resistance to high temperature, corrosion, and intergranular corrosion resistance.
410 Stainless Steel Sheet
410 stainless steel is a kind of martensitic stainless steel, 410 plate has good corrosion resistance, high strength, and excellent machinability, and is widely used in the production of general knife blades, mechanical parts, and Class 1 cutlery (e.g., spoons, forks, knives, etc.). This stainless steel sheet contains 11.5%-13.5% chromium and a small amount of nickel, so it has excellent corrosion and heat resistance and can resist a wide range of chemicals, and be used for long periods in high-temperature environments. Despite the superior performance of 410 stainless steel plate, its thermal conductivity is low, processing is difficult, and the price is relatively high. Therefore, the choice needs to be considered according to the actual demand and cost.
430 Stainless Steel Sheet
430 stainless steel plate is ferritic stainless steel, 430 stainless steel contains chromium 16.00-18.00%, basically, no nickel, 430 stainless steel plate has all the characteristics of 430 stainless steel, is the good corrosion resistance and general-purpose steel, thermal conductivity is better than austenitic, the coefficient of thermal expansion is smaller than austenitic, heat fatigue, add stabilization element titanium, weld parts of the mechanical properties of good, mainly used for architectural decorative use, fuel burner parts, household appliances, home appliance parts.
2205 Duplex Plate
2205 stainless steel sheet, as a duplex stainless steel with both austenitic and ferritic structure, shows excellent performance. Recommended processing temperatures range from 1020 to 1150°C to ensure that the workpiece is heated uniformly and to avoid cracks caused by temperature gradients. Due to the high hardness of the 2205 stainless steel plate, it is necessary to use a high-power, rigid machine to process. 2205 stainless steel plate has good corrosion resistance and is widely used in the chemical industry, pharmaceuticals, marine engineering and other fields.
300 Series
Plate & Sheet Surface Finishes
Stainless steel plate & sheet have various finishing conditions to suit the application, there are main surface finishes below, which can be obtained by cold rolling or hot rolling producing method. Standard stainless steel sheets and plates are solid and flat with no surface texture.

Cold Rolled & Hot Rolled Differences
There are some differences between hot-rolled steel and cold rolled in the metal industry, the main difference is the manufacturing process of steel, Hot-rolled steel is rolled at a high temperature, which makes steel easy to form and to fabricate hot rolled type steel is easier to get target sizes and dimensions after processing, Cold rolled steel is rolled on the basis of hot rolled steel, then picking and remove scale on the surface, cooling at room temperature, they have benefits respectively。
Hot Rolled Stainless Steel Plate
- Uniform grain size, avoiding structure defect
- Improve properties
- Shaped and formed easily
- Non-metallic inclusions inside steel remain
- Stress exists
- Not easy to control width and thickness precisely
- Scaled surface
- Cheaper than cold rolled steel
Cold Rolled Stainless Steel Plate
- Clear and smooth surface
- More finishes option
- Closer tolerances
- Stronger hardness
- Limited in a few shapes
