ASTM A312 TP316L Stainless Steel
TP316L stainless steel is molybdenum-bearing grade, beside TP304 grade, it is second used Austenitic stainless steel material, because TP316L has excellent properties.
With molybdenum alloy addition, and low carbon content, TP316L possesses better overall corrosion resistant properties, particular in chloride environments.
ASTM A312 TP316L Chemical Composition
Grade | C | Si | Mn | Cr | Ni | Mo | S | P |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
TP316L | 0,035 | 1,0 | 2 | 16 – 18 | 10 – 15 | 2 – 3 | 0,03 | 0,045 |

Grade | Tensile Strength(Mpa) | Yield Point(Mpa) | Elongation(%) |
---|---|---|---|
316L | 485 | 170 | 35 |
* Minimum value, unless otherwise indicated.
TP316 is higher carbon content grade compared to TP316L, in practice, it can be dual certified with TP316L to obtain better properties.
Other grades are avalaible, ASTM 312 TP304, ASTM A312 TP304L.
ASTM A312 TP 316L Seamless Pipe
ASTM A312 specification covers welded and seamless stainless steel pipes, seamless pipe is made from billet, a hollow semi finished tube, then hot rolling or cold drawn process, our mill adopt cold rolled and cold drawn to produce seamless pipe.
ASTM A312 TP 316L Welded Pipe
ERW or EFW welding method is usually used for ASTM A312 welded pipe, making from plate without additional metal filler, often single longitudinal welding is used, for large diameter pipe, double longitudinal welding is accepted.
Heat Treatment
ASTM A312 TP316L grade minimum solution temperature is 1040 degree, then and cool rapidly, it can not be harden by annealing, both seamless and welded stainless steel pipes shall be furnished in heat treatment condition comply to ASTM A312 specification.
ASTM A312 TP316L Stainless Steel Pipe Sizes
Pipe sizes are based on ANSI B36.19, outside diameter ranges from NPS 1/8 inch to 30 Inch, that is 10.3 to 762 mm, DN 6 to DN 750, wall thickness ranges from Sch 5S to 80S.
Small diameter pipe, thin wall pipe and heavy wall pipe are available on request.
We should notice that pipe sizes under NPS 14 inch is not actual diameter, for example, NPS 8 inch, it is 219.08 mm, not 203.2 mm.
ASTM A312 Stainless Steel Pipe Tolerances

over 864 to 1219.2 | +4.80/-0.08 |
ASTM A312 TP 316L Pipe Quality Control
ASTM A312 TP316L pipe dimensional tolerance should be confirmed to above table, tight tolerance is often offered doe special requirement, mechanical tests should be performed in accordance with ASTM A312, flare for seamless pipes, flange and reverse flatten for welded pipes.

- Difference between 316l and 316 – 316L is very similar to 316 in almost every aspect. there both are durable, corrosion-resistant, and a good choice for high-stress applications, in practice, dual certified grade 316/316L is often required. However, the “L” designation means 316L steel has less carbon than 316 steel, it is less susceptible to sensitization, a condition caused when carbon combines with chromium around the grain boundaries, depleting the grain boundary areas of chromium during welding process, though it can be resisted via annealing.
