ASTM A270 TP316 Welded Sanitary Tube
Starting from stainless steel strip or coil, we use an automatic welding process for welded tubes, all tubes shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition, the annealing temperature should be 1040° C minimum, and rapidly quenched, welding bead removed.
Welded sanitary stainless steel tubing is manufactured using automatic TIG welding technology, all the tubing is detected by Eddy current test, weld ends corner cut at 90 degrees to the tube length for automatic welding, tubes are thoroughly rinsed with de-ionized water with no residue, bright annealed with 99.99 percent hydrogen gas at the minimum temperature level of 1040 degrees C and rapidly quenched to achieve the maximum cold-finish effect.

Testing
Each tube shall be subjected to mechanical tests like reverse flattening test, hydrostatic test, or nondestructive electric test, in practice eddy current testing is the most used testing.
Annealing
All tubing shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition, Hydrogen bright annealed in line to 1900°F(1040° C) minimum and rapidly quenched.
Surface Finishes
ASTM A270 permits Mill Finish, Mechanically Polished to a variety of grit finishes, or Electropolished ID with Mechanically Polished OD.
The surface finish is 20 Ra ID maximum, 30 Ra OD maximum surface roughness measured with the profilometer reading at 90 degrees to the major polishing pattern. Our polishing techniques result in surface finishes that lead the industry. All tubing is printed with size, alloy, and heat number for full traceability.
Packaging
To ensure sanitary standards, our tubing is packaged using protective sleeving, capped with air-tight plastic end caps. The tubing is then placed in thick cardboard cores and capped securely on each end for maximum protection during shipment. Large quantities will be shipped securely in wood or metal crates.
ASTM A270 Specification
ASTM A270 is a standard specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubes for sanitary equipment published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), this standard plays a vital role in the field of water supply and drainage equipment, especially in the dairy and food industries, where the surface finish and material properties of the tubes are extremely demanding.
The ASTM A270/A270M standard specification covers seamless, welded and heavy cold-finished welded austenitic and ferritic/austenitic stainless steel sanitary tubing. These tubes are used not only in the dairy and food industries, but also in a wide range of medical, pharmaceutical, and other applications where stringent hygienic conditions are required. The standard specifies that the outside diameter dimensions of the tubes covered do not exceed 12 inches (300 mm) and provides values in SI units or in inch-pound units, but it should be noted that the values specified in each system may not be identical, and should therefore be used independently of each other to avoid combinations that could lead to non-compliance with the standard.
The standard specification not only stipulates the basic dimensions and tolerances of the tube, but also puts forward strict requirements on its physical properties, chemical composition, mechanical properties and surface quality. In terms of physical properties, the pipe is required to have sufficient strength and toughness to withstand various pressures and stresses during use. In terms of chemical composition, the maximum and minimum contents of various elements in stainless steel are listed in detail to ensure that the tubes have excellent corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance. Mechanical properties, through the tensile test, impact test and hardness test, etc., to ensure that the tube can maintain stable performance when subjected to external forces.
The ASTM A270 standard has extremely high requirements for the inner and outer wall finish of tubing. Since tubing for sanitary equipment is usually in direct contact with food or medical supplies, it is important to ensure that the surface of the tubing is free of defects such as cracks, corrosion and oil to avoid contaminating the product or affecting product quality. To achieve this goal, the standard provides detailed surface treatment and inspection methods, such as pickling, passivation, polishing, etc., to ensure that the surface of the tube meets the specified finish requirements.
The ASTM A270 standard also provides optional supplemental requirements to meet the special needs of specific applications. For example, in the medical field, additional biocompatibility testing of the tubing may be required to ensure that it does not have any harmful effects on the human body. In the pharmaceutical industry, special cleaning and sterilisation of the tubing may be required to meet GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) requirements. These additional requirements usually need to be specified in the order so that the manufacturer can produce and test according to the customer’s requirements.
ASTM A270 standard specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubes and pipes for sanitary equipment provides strong technical support for the production, inspection and use. Firstly, in the production stage, manufacturers must strictly follow the process requirements specified in the standard, including the selection of raw materials, control of processing, surface treatment and inspection. Through this process, it can ensure the production of high-quality tubes that meet the requirements of the standard. Secondly, during the inspection stage, manufacturers need to carry out comprehensive inspections and tests on the tubes produced to verify their compliance with the requirements in the standards. These inspections and tests include appearance checks, dimensional measurements, physical property tests, chemical composition analyses and surface quality checks. Through this process, problems in the production process can be detected and corrected in a timely manner to ensure that the quality of the product meets customer requirements. Finally, in the use stage, the user needs to follow the standard installation and use requirements to ensure that the tubing can properly play its role. At the same time, users also need to carry out regular maintenance and repair of the tubing to extend its service life and maintain its good performance.
