Welded Stainless Steel Sanitary Tube
Starting from stainless steel strip or coil, we use an automatic welding process for welded tubes, all tubes shall be furnished in the heat-treated condition, the weld bead is cold-worked to a full finished condition, resulting in a virtually undetectable longitudinal weld. Bright annealing to 1,900°F minimum follows in a controlled atmosphere to preserve maximum structural integrity. The tubes are then mechanically polished to a 180 grit (20 μ-in. Ra maximum) interior and 150 grit (32 μ-in. Ra maximum) exterior finish.
Polishing Finishes And Ra Value
The surface finishes may be specified: mill finish, mechanically polished surface finish, finish No. 80, finish No. 120, finish No. 180, finish No. 240 grit, we possess advanced manufacturing and polishing capabilities to meet polishing service.
Our team offers the lowest Ra value sanitary tubing, both outside surface and inside surface, tubing roughness is in Ra 0.5 µm ID, Ra 0.8 µm OD maximum, measured as ASME/ANSI B46.1, and other Ra finishes are available upon request.
Standard Grit and equivalent Ra value, Ra (um) 6.3 are mill finishes, 0.8 level is standard sanitary finishes, food grade is high-level sanitary tubes, we can offer mirror finishes tubes.
Standard Grit (Reference Only) | Ra (Uin) | Ra (Um) |
---|---|---|
60 | 985 | 6.3 |
180 | 32 | 0.8 |
220 | 20 | 0.51 |
320 | 10 | 0.25 |
Testing
Each tube shall be subjected to mechanical tests like reverse flattening test, hydrostatic test, or nondestructive electric test, in practice eddy current testing is the most used testing.

Sanitary tubing is a kind of tubing having a special surface, commonly polishing process is carried out for high-performance tubing, and sanitary tubing is for use in the bakery, beverage, dairy, food, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical Industries.
Tubing should conform to ASTM A270 and 3A sanitary standards requirements, in both welded and seamless types.
Stainless steel is an ideal material for sanitary tubing, it has good corrosion resistance with high strength, which is the basic properties of stainless steel, tubing is easy to clean outside and inside, removing residues, and stainless steel material is not harmful to human health.
Common stainless steel grades have TP304, TP304L, and TP316L, other grades are available for various applications.
Sanitary Tubing Dimensions
Tubing sizes are 1/2 inch to 8 inch in outside diameter, common sizes are 12.7 mm, 19.05 mm, 25.4 mm, 38.1 mm, 50.8 mm, 63.5 mm, 76.2 mm, 101.6 mm, 152 mm, 152.4 mm, 203.2 mm.
Wall thickness sizes are 1.0 mm, 1.25 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.65 mm, 2.0 mm, and 2.5 mm, there are a wide range of sizes for options.
Polishing Tubing
To achieve a smooth surface, tubing always is needed to make the polishing process, mechanical polishing is the most used method to smooth the tubing surface.
Roughness is measured using the Ra value, the common Ra value is less than 0.8 μm for the outside and inside surface after polishing, and the roughness value reaches 0.2 μm.
Polishing grit contains 180, 320, 400, and mirror finish.
Sanitary Tubing Quality
Welded tubes are the main types for sanitary purposes, we use the TIG automatic welding method to manufacture tubing, then annealed, minimum temperature is 1040 degree C, and rapidly cooled to achieve the maximum cold finish effect
Each tubing should be conducted eddy current testing to ensure high-quality tubing, other tests conform to ASTM A270 specification.
Stainless steel sanitary tubing is joined with other components, fittings, tees, and valves.
